$10-$20 per person on a sliding scale to enable everyone to attend with different means from students to working professionals to retirees. Additional financial assistance is available on a case-by-case basis.
FORMAT:
First, review fundamental concepts before exploring new ideas presented to everyone with some discussion between attendees and practice leaders. Then, play two or three songs to let folks practice, and we'll rotate a few times each song. Next, practice leaders will offer tips and tricks or move onto a new/slightly different topic. Repeat until we run out of time! This format is subject to change; however, there will be several concepts shared and plenty of practice time with music playing.
PREREQUISITES:
No partner required, but please encourage your friends to attend! If a class date is not advertised as beginner-friendly, please have some previous partner dance experience (Lindy Hop, West Coast, Tango, Salsa, etc.) of at least 6 months to a year before you consider attending. Otherwise, please attend Swing Dance Classes with Mike and Elli at Dance Station on most Sundays 5:30-6:15 PM for basic swing and 6:30-7:15 PM for intermediate swing. CODE OF CONDUCT:
Our goal is to ensure that anyone who wants to learn and practice Balboa can feel safe, welcome, and respected at our events. Attending our meetings means that you agree to the following:
1. Be kind! We are all adults here. There is no reason to insult fellow students or teachers, either directly or behind their backs. If you have a genuine concern or complaint about anyone, please bring it to a member of the admin team, and we will work with you to determine an appropriate resolution to the problem.
2. Respect the dance space! Wear clean shoes on the dance floor and always leave this space in the same condition that you found it.
3. Respect others’ personal space! Balboa is often danced in a close embrace, but some dancers may not be comfortable with that. Ask for verbal consent when dancing with a new partner and please keep your hands in “safe zones” at all times.
4. Respect everyone’s right to self-determination! This is an affirming space for people of all races, gender identities, sexual orientations, body types, and variations of physical and mental ability. We believe that anyone can choose to be a lead or follow (or switch!) regardless of their demographic identity. When attending this class, be prepared to drill moves and dance with any and all other participants, regardless of their gender, race, etc.
5. Do not attend if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This is a safety issue and strictly prohibited by the venue. If you are noticeably inebriated, you will be asked to leave.
6. Give us feedback! If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions about the way this class is run, please don’t hesitate to bring them up with a member of the admin team.
Thank you and see you soon!
